Pyrenean Mountain Tour

For lovers of nature and walking, we have adapted our popular Catalan Experience tour with greater emphasis on the breathtaking scenery to be found in the Pyrenean mountains. Book-ended by nights in the regional capitals of Perpignan and Toulouse, your journey replicates the Catalan tour to Saillagouse, on the Cerdagne plateau, rejoins the “petit train jaune” to its terminus by the Spanish frontier, then on to mountain-circled Ax-les-Thermes, thence south through the wilds of the Ariège.

Both Saillagouse (see Catalan Tour), where you spend 3 nights, and Ax–les-Thermes, 2 nights, make excellent stops, offering friendly, comfortable accommodation, good local food and superb and varied walking country. with mile upon mile of marked footpaths affording magical vistas of peaks, gorges, lakes, waterfalls and a rich flora and fauna, including marmots, lynx, eagles and vultures. Ax is both a charming spa, noted for its cures for rheumatism since the Middle Ages, and ski resort, close to Andorra and the Spanish frontier. Symbol of Catalonia in its distinctive yellow and blood-red livery, the little yellow train climbs to over 1600 metres in passing the highest station on the mainland SNCF network on its sedate, snaking, exhilirating progress to the Spanish frontier. The unforgettable journey is very much part of the holiday experience, not just a means of getting from A to B.
