From the marshlands of the Camargue to the foothills of the Pyrenees extends one of the largest and most varied regions of France. Here ancient towns and picturesque villages of historical interest are only specks on the vast, continuous tapestry of lush forests, highly developed agricultural land, sun-baked lowlands, placid waterways, and seemingly endless sandy beaches. Inland, the fertile rolling plains, terraced hillsides and valleys through which meander placid rivers, yield their produce in abundance, especially the renowned local wines which complement admirably the excellent regional cuisine.
On the Mediterranean coast – two hundred kilometres of almost uninterrupted sandy beaches – fishing villages mingle happily with traditional family resorts and purpose built leisure facilities offering up to date facilities for all types of land and water sports. Towards the Spanish frontier the landscape changes again, with the towering peaks, tumbling streams, high altitude lakes and effervescent springs of the Pyrenees. Here villages seem to have only a tenuous foothold on the steep hillsides and the spa towns offer, not only medicinal natural cures, but the purest mountain air.
