HOTEL BARGE CRUISING
IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE
WEEKEND CRUISE - BEAUCAIRE TO ST GILLES
Friday
Late afternoon transfer from Nimes TGV station
to the PHENICIEN. There will be time to
explore the hotel barge or even the port
and its environs. Your first dinner on board
is an indication of the high standard of
cuisine that you will enjoy during the cruise,
the accompanying wines have been specially
chosen from the best local vineyards.
Saturday
The morning is for visiting the old town
of Beaucaire. Officially recognised as a
"Ville d'Arts et d'Histoire" particularly
for its chateau, craft work and 18th century
architecture. Back on board for lunch during
which the Phenicien negotiates the Nourriguier
lock and on to Bellegard. The afternoon
is devoted to wine, both modern and ancient.
Firstly a visit to the famous Costieres
de Nimes cellars, with a full explanation
on how the Romans made wine 2000 years ago,
then on to the wine tasting, which holds
some surprises even for connoisseurs. There
is time enough to relax in this peaceful
little port before dinner.
Sunday
After breakfast the Phenicien continues
its leisurely cruise down to St Gilles,
gateway to the Camargue. After lunch on
board there is a guided tour of the 12th
century abbey church, a veritable jewel
from the middle ages. The church is classified
as a world heritage site by UNESCO because
of its prominence on the pilgrim's route
to Saint-Jacques de Compostelle, and its
façade, a famous example of roman
art. Not to be missed is the spiral staircase
which is of great architectural purity and
also dates back to the 12th century. The
captain hosts this final dinner.
